讲座简介:

As a game changer, the arrival of the Tesla Model 3 on March 31, 2016, significantly affected the market for combustion engine sedan and hatchback cars, rather than cars with other body types. Using eBay used car auction data, we examine the extent to which the Model 3 announcement impacts the prices and transaction quantities of these vehicles. Our analysis reveals that while the average auction final price decreases significantly, the transaction quantity remains unaffected. We further find robust evidence indicating that the price decline primarily results from a decrease in buyers’ willingness to pay, approximately 6 percent, driven by lowered expectations of the cars’ future residual values. Our welfare analysis suggests that while the market maintains allocative efficiency, there is a redistributive effect that the decrease in willingness to pay entirely translates into lower seller surplus, and consequently, sellers bear almost all the welfare loss. The asymmetric welfare impact highlights sellers’ limited ability to adjust supply in the short run within the used car market.

车晓刚,伦敦城市大学经济学系Reader,曾任杜伦大学助理教授。获悉尼大学经济学博士,研究聚焦拍卖机制、产业组织及数字经济,于《Journal of Marketing Research》《American Economic Journal: Microeconomics》《Games and Economic Behavior》等顶级期刊发表论文20余篇。主持英国研究理事会(UKRI)“The Impacts of Central Bank Digital Currency on Banking Industry: Empirical Evidence from China.”的项目并以“Willingness to Pay for Brand Reputation: Lessons from the Volkswagen Diesel Emissions Scandal.”得到British Academy Small Research Grant。现任《International Journal of Finance & Economics》副主编等。
