主题：Exploring the Dynamics of Chinese Emigration through Transnational Genealogical Lens

讲座简介：

Based on a transnational genealogy of a Chinese clan, this study constructs an individual-level dataset spanning five centuries to examine the determinants of overseas migration and its impacts on the outcomes of migrant households across generations. We document that household structure, kinship networks, and external macro shocks significantly influence individual's probability of overseas migration. To address the potential endogeneity of migration decision, we construct an instrumental variable for migration status based on the combination of push and pull factors. The IV estimates suggest that migration increases the probability of marriage and fertility of first- and second-generation migrants, indicating their improved socioeconomic conditions, but the benefits largely disappear among later-generation migrants. First-generation migrants contributed more donations to the clan, which had a spillover effect on close relatives who stayed at home.

谢斌，暨南大学经济与社会研究院副教授，获得美国新泽西州立大学经济学博士学位，北京大学经济学学士学位。主要研究领域为经济史，劳动经济学，发展经济学，研究成果发表于Journal of Development Economics, Explorations in Economic History, Journal of Policy Analysis and Management, Journal of Comparative Economics,《经济学（季刊）》等国内外权威期刊，主持国家自然科学基金青年项目。
